Today marks Bicycle Day. It is always celebrated on the 19th of April every year. The bicycle for me evokes so many memories of my awesome childhood. I remember a bicycle was the in thing to have during those times. I remember many parents would promise their children that if they do well in school, they would be bought for a bicycle.
Nowadays, it’s not a popular thing with children; they prefer gadgets, PlayStations and Xboxes…What a world it’s surely turning out to be! Many parents are nowadays no longer encouraging their children to take part in outdoor activities but rather encouraging them to keep their eyes fixated on the screen as they play video games, watch cartoons and movies all in the name of ‘love’. It is no wonder that there has been an upward trend of childhood obesity in our society. In fact, it has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years!
There is no better time than now to make cycling a popular thing among our children so we can reverse the negative effects of childhood obesity.
Children should exercise. The important thing to remember is to make exercise enjoyable. Parents have a greater role in ensuring their children are healthy by ensuring they engage in active play as much as possible. They should help their children select activities that are fun. They should select activities everyone can win such as tag, any sports, jogging , swimming ,hiking or bike riding…
Today I will focus more on the advantages of cycling which are endless.
These are just but a few…
1. It is one of the best ways to raise your metabolism while dieting, because biking is an aerobic form of exercise.
2. When biking is coupled up with strength training, it will help you to lose weight and then tone the specific parts of your body that you want to improve.
3. When done regularly it increases your life span. A regular exercise program not only improves the quality of life but also its length. Physical activity is important at all stages in the life cycle from childhood to extreme old age. Adults who bike to work have better weight, blood pressure, and insulin levels. Women who bike 30+ minutes a day have a lower risk of breast cancer. Adolescents who bicycle are 48% less likely to be overweight as adults.
4. Cycling is less expensive than driving.
Biking improves your health and quality of life. It gets you outside, relieves stress, and just generally makes you feel better about life.
Happy Bicycle Day!
